Mixed Methods Webinar Series

Presented by Dr. Burke Johnson

What many of us learned from the "paradigm wars" is that we appreciate ideas from multiple paradigms. We don't want to be confined to a single paradigm, one way of thinking, or a silo. The purpose of this webinar is to introduce attendees to a systematic philosophy/theory for dialoging with important differences--it's called dialectical pluralism (DP). DP assumes a pluralist ontology and uses a dialectical, dialogical, hermeneutical epistemology. The key idea is to carefully listen and learn from the other, and then create a third/new alternative from the component parts. The use of a deliberative democratic process provides procedural justification of decisions, which helps produce broad acceptance of decisions, even when one's stance is different from the final outcome. DP not only dialogues with paradigms, it also is used to construct a workable combination of stakeholder values, research methodologies, and methods of data collection on a study-by-study basis. In short, DP pluralism justifies the construction of new "mixed" wholes and provides specific strategies, that have been shown to work in practice, for getting there.
