    Publishing High-Quality Mixed Methods Research: Insights from JMMR Editors

    MMIRA is pleased to host a webinar with Timothy Guetterman and Sergi Fàbregues, Co-Editors of the Journal of Mixed Methods Research. This session will introduce the journal and provide practical guidance on publishing high-quality mixed methods research.

    The webinar will cover what editors look for in strong submissions, common pitfalls to avoid, and actionable tips to strengthen manuscripts for peer review. It is designed for researchers at all career stages who are working with, or considering, mixed methods approaches.

    Sergi Fàbregues is an Associate Professor of Research Methods in the Department of Psychology and Education at Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (Barcelona, Spain), Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Mixed Methods Research, and Core Faculty member of the Mixed Methods Program at the University of Michigan. His research interests center on qualitative and mixed methods research, including quality appraisal, the integration of quantitative and qualitative approaches, and systematic methodological reviews. He has taught multiple international seminars on these topics. He has served as a methodological consultant for qualitative and mixed methods studies in a variety of disciplines, including psychology, education, public health, and nursing.

    Timothy C. Guetterman, PhD, is an Associate Professor and Associate Director of the Mixed Methods Program at the University of Michigan. His methodological interest is to advance rigorous mixed methods research methodology, particularly strategies for intersecting and integrating qualitative and quantitative research. He also conducts health services research with a focus on improving quality and safety using informatics technology. Tim has also focused on teaching, learning, and research methods capacity building. He has extensive professional experience conducting program evaluation with a focus on educational and healthcare programs. He serves as Co-Editor in Chief for the Journal of Mixed Methods Research.

    June 2026 MMIRA Webinar: 

    From Integration to Validation: Practical Approaches in Mixed Methods Research

    MMIRA is pleased to host a webinar on advancing integration in mixed methods research. This session will focus on practical and theory-driven approaches for strengthening the integration of quantitative and qualitative data.

    The webinar will explore strategies such as the use of joint displays, as well as the connections between integration and assessment development and validation. Drawing on a multiphase study of high school students’ scientific argumentation competence, the session will provide concrete examples and actionable insights for improving rigor, transparency, and reporting in mixed methods research.

    Dr. Jinglu Zhang is a lecturer of science education at Nanjing Normal University, China. Her research centers around promoting meaningful science teaching and learning by focusing on emotion and affect and through scientific practices like argumentation. In line with this, her research aims at helping students achieve flourishing through a humanistic approach of science education. She is interested in exploring ways of using mixed methods methodology to pursue such research endeavour. Dr. Zhang has published in top-tier journals such as Journal of Research in Science Teaching and Journal of Mixed Methods Research. She is the principal investigator of several research projects including a national research project.  She is also an editorial board member for the Journal of Research in Science Teaching and serves as a reviewer in several other journals.
