Using Explanatory Sequential Mixed Methods to Examine Heterogeneity Among Vulnerable Children
Children living in poverty are often treated as a homogeneous group despite having diverse health and social needs. In this webinar, I will present an explanatory sequential mixed methods study that explored the heterogeneity of children living in public assistance households in Japan. The study first employed quantitative survey data and soft clustering analysis to identify distinct subgroups of children with different patterns of needs. Qualitative interviews were subsequently conducted to explore how practitioners understood these patterns and what types of support might be appropriate for each subgroup. The integration of quantitative and qualitative findings provided a more comprehensive understanding of children's circumstances than either method alone. The webinar will discuss the rationale for using an explanatory sequential design, approaches to integrating quantitative and qualitative findings, methodological challenges encountered during the study, and the implications of mixed methods research for understanding health inequities among vulnerable populations.
